Police appeal for witnesses after serious Guildford hit-and-run

Police are appealing for witnesses following a hit-and-run in Guildford, Surrey, which left a pedestrian seriously injured. The collision happened at a mini roundabout on Egerton Road, close to Joseph’s Kebab Van, just after 21:00 BST on Sunday. The pedestrian, a man in his late teens, was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

According to Surrey Police, the driver of the car failed to stop and was last seen heading towards Park Barn. No arrests have yet been made, and officers are conducting extensive inquiries to trace the vehicle and identify the driver involved in the Guildford hit-and-run.

This incident comes amid worrying figures that show Surrey has one of the highest rates of serious road injuries in the country. In 2024, the Surrey county council area recorded 3,120 people who were killed or seriously injured in road vehicle accidents. Only Kent reported more, with 3,821.

Across the UK, 29,467 people were killed or seriously injured in road accidents over the same period.

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has voiced alarm at the trend, warning that “progress on road safety has stalled”. It has also highlighted that “vulnerable road users now account for over half of all fatalities, highlighting the need for a new approach to road safety”.

Surrey Police are appealing to anyone who was in the Egerton Road area, near the Royal Surrey County Hospital, Tesco, or Park Barn between 20:45 and 21:15 on Sunday, to come forward if they saw anything that might assist with the investigation. Officers are also asking anyone with CCTV, dashcam, or helmet camera footage that may have captured the incident or the fleeing vehicle to get in touch as soon as possible.
