Buckingham to Hold Holocaust Memorial Day Ceremony at Bourton Park

Buckingham Town Council will mark Holocaust Memorial Day on Tuesday 27 January 2026 with a ceremony at 11am around the Holocaust Memorial Stone in Bourton Park. The event is open to all members of the public.

Holocaust Memorial Day honours the memory of the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, as well as the millions of others killed under Nazi persecution and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

The ceremony will be hosted by the Town Mayor, Councillor Fran Davies, and will feature readings and poems from members of the local community and schools. Attendees are advised that parking in Bourton Park is limited, and are encouraged to use footpaths, public transport, or considerate on-street parking in nearby residential areas.

The memorial stone itself was installed in 2021. It is made of bedrock sourced from Buckingham’s Brackley Road cemetery and was transported by local company Paragon Tool Hire as a gesture to the community. Local stonemason and master letter carver Louis Francis engraved the Holocaust Memorial Day emblem and wording on the stone.

Across the UK, Holocaust Memorial Day is marked annually with events at iconic landmarks and buildings illuminated in purple. Individuals are also encouraged to place candles in their windows to take a stand against prejudice and hatred.
