A nurse who organised a wedding for a terminally ill patient with just a few days’ notice and a group of volunteers described as “knights of the road” by vulnerable patients they drive to appointments.
These are just some of the life-affirming and life-changing winners at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s Shine Awards, their annual staff and volunteers’ celebration.
The Patient Champion award went to Sarah Folan, Palliative Care Nurse at Basildon Hospital. She was recognised for providing extraordinary care and compassion to a patient and his family during the final weeks of his life.
Her actions meant he could spend precious time at home with the dignity, comfort and support he needed.
Sarah organised a wedding within days, so the couple could marry. Her calm, caring approach allowed the family to focus on making precious memories together.
The patient’s wife described Sarah as a “true angel” who, through her kindness and dedication, has left a legacy that she’ll never forget.
Holding her award, Sarah said: “I’m so honoured, but I’d like to also remember the family who nominated me. My award is really a reflection of the outstanding team I’m privileged to be part of every day. Together we give the highest standards of care, particularly for patients and families at the end of life.”
A new awards category for this year, Volunteer of the Year was won by Carecars, a team of 40 drivers and 18 clerks who provide transport, making it easier for vulnerable patients to get to their appointments.
Carecars offers reassurance, kindness and practical support during what can be difficult and stressful times. Whether adapting to last-minute changes, supporting patients with complex needs, or simply being a friendly face, they are there when needed.
Sue Thorn, from Carecars, said: “All of our volunteers give their time and care so freely and it really makes a difference. They’re incredibly proud to support our patients and communities, winning this is the perfect way to celebrate that commitment and the impact they have on people’s lives every single day.”
Adam Sewell-Jones, Group Chief Executive of the Trust, said: “This year has been our biggest Shine Awards yet, with more than 1,000 nominations telling so many stories of people who have gone the extra mile for our patients, their families or colleagues.
“Across our hospitals, community services and support teams, colleagues and volunteers make a difference every day through their compassion, professionalism, innovation and commitment to patient care.
“While only a small number of nominees can be shortlisted, every nomination reflects the values and behaviours that make us proud to work at the Trust.”
Another winner was the recipient of the Outstanding Achievement award (individual), Dr Adjany Bohorquez. The exceptional Southend Hospital Stroke and Geriatric Medicine Consultant’s dedication, compassion and professionalism have had a significant impact on patients and colleagues alike.
She takes the time to make sure patients fully understand their care, providing reassurance and support during difficult times. As a mentor to new doctors, she provides invaluable guidance, support and encouragement, helping to build confidence and competence.
Following winning the award, Dr Bohorquez said: “This recognition really belongs to the incredible team I’m lucky enough to work alongside. Their compassion, professionalism and commitment to our patients makes a real difference. I’m grateful for their friendship, support and teamwork, especially during the toughest shifts.”
Winner of the Rising Star award was Maddie. The Staff Nurse at Broomfield Hospital has made an exceptional impact early in her nursing career through her passion for patient care and commitment to continuous improvement.
As a newly qualified nurse, Maddie has led a range of initiatives to improve tissue viability and pressure ulcer prevention on her ward, including making guidance, pathways and learning resources more accessible for colleagues.
Winning her award, Maddie said: ““I am really thankful to the people who have supported me and my work from the very beginning. They’ve encouraged my ideas, backed me when I’ve tried something new and helped me believe that I can make a difference.”
Dr Andy Wood, OBE, Chair of the Trust, said: “The evening was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the extraordinary people who make Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust such a special organisation to be part of.
“Finalists, nominees and guests enjoyed celebrating the outstanding people and teams whose dedication helps our services, and each other, shine.”
The ceremony took place at Stock Brook Manor in Billericay and was sponsored by HW Wilson Limited, Attain Health Management Service Ltd, CPW and Laser Electrical.
