F1 Presenter Laura Winter Inspires Next Generation of Sports Journalists at University of Gloucestershire

Sharing impressive insights from her career in motorsport broadcasting, Laura Winter advises the youth of Sports Journalism on a panel discussing her approach to live broadcasting and road to success.

Her first words of wisdom:

“Be the most prepared version of yourself for anything you’re undertaking so you know you’re going in with the utmost control. Preparation is key for all opportunities. Say yes to things and take the opportunities that come your way – you never know where life will take you.”

As a regular mentor supporting students through Q&A audience events and providing practical guidance as a guest editor on newsdays, Laura has been a course associate since 2022. During this visit, she appeared on the ‘Park Life’ podcast alongside Vice-Chancellor and CEO of the University, Dame Clare Marchant, to discuss her experiences in sports media and the approaching climax of the F1 season.

The students were privy to exclusive insights into the world of F1 journalism, including preparation techniques for broadcasts, handing confidential information, navigating a rapidly evolving media landscape, and what it means to be a woman working in sports journalism.

Brendan McLoughlin, Academic Course Leader for Sports Journalism said:

“We are delighted and honoured to continue benefiting from Laura’s expertise as a sports journalist. She is without doubt one of the very best broadcasters around and a true inspiration to our students.

“Her visit was particularly timely as we celebrate our highest-ever intake of women in the current first-year cohort. The insights she shares are invaluable for students at the very start of their careers, helping them understand what it takes to succeed in the industry.”

Laura is one of several leading industry figures who regularly deliver guest talks that enrich Sports Journalism students’ studies. Sports broadcaster Jill Douglas MBE and F1 TV presenter Lawrence Barretto are two among many.

Their ongoing involvement ensures students benefit from direct access to the realities of elite sports broadcasting and the expectations of a fast-moving media industry.
