Museum of Lost Bookmarks at South Molton Library Showcases Forgotten Finds

South Molton Library in Devon has turned a quirky collection of returned-book finds into a unique attraction, the Museum of Lost Bookmarks. The library has gathered dozens of forgotten markers left inside returned books and created a wall display to showcase them.

Emma Ward, a library assistant, said the exhibit is still growing. “We think we will need a bit more room for it to grow as there are always more bookmarks coming into the library. We’ll do what we can to reunite them with people but if not, we will honour them by putting them on display,” she explained.

The bookmarks come in all shapes and sizes, according to Alice Haynes, the library supervisor. “They include receipts, slips of paper, shopping lists, children’s creations, photos, postcards, people really will use anything to mark their place in a book,” she said.

Staff members also shared their favourite finds. Emma Ward highlighted a jigsaw-shaped bookmark, saying, “my favourite bookmark would be the jigsaw one, we love a jigsaw here in the library.” Alice Haynes was captivated by a scrap of paper with the note, “still chainsawing, still love you, still no puppy.” She added, “I’d really love to know the story behind that one but it’s never been claimed or reunited.”

The Museum of Lost Bookmarks has become a charming feature of South Molton Library, drawing attention to the creativity and personal touches that readers leave behind. The display not only celebrates the whimsical nature of bookmarks but also encourages a sense of curiosity and connection within the community.
