University of Reading hosts community Iftar to strengthen trust across the city

More than 150 people gathered at the University of Reading for a community Iftar aimed at strengthening relationships between the university and the wider local community.

The event, held on Wednesday 25 February in the Great Hall at the university’s London Road campus, brought together staff, students and residents from across Reading to share the traditional sunset meal that marks the end of the daily fast during Ramadan.

Guests from a wide range of backgrounds and faiths attended the evening, which centred on the theme “Building Community Trust.” Among those present were the Mayor of Reading, Councillor Dr Alice Mpofu-Coles, and the Mayor of Earley Town, Councillor Nicola Brock.

Organisers said the event was designed to create an open and welcoming space where people from different cultures and beliefs could come together, share food and conversation, and strengthen understanding across the community.

Following the breaking of the fast with traditional dishes, guests heard reflections from university leaders about the role institutions can play in fostering dialogue and connection.

Professor Parveen Yaqoob, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Reading, said: “Ramadan is a time of reflection, compassion and generosity, and this Iftar was a wonderful opportunity to bring our campus community together with residents from across Reading.

“Trust is built through presence and honest dialogue, and events like this play an important role in strengthening the bonds between the University and the communities we are part of.”

The Iftar was organised in partnership with Dialogue Society Reading and the Fellowship Educational Society. Donations collected during the evening supported Dialogue Society Reading’s Life of a Chickpea Project, which works with schools and local groups to promote equality, diversity and intercultural understanding.

By bringing together people from across the city to share a meal and conversation, organisers hope the annual gathering will continue to deepen connections between the university and the communities it serves.
