Two orthopaedic operating theatres have been newly upgraded, helping shorten the time patients are waiting for surgery.
Staff working in theatres 6 and 7, in the main theatre department at Basildon Hospital, have already completed 175 operations and procedures, including shoulder replacements, foot reconstructions and knee replacements, since the start of November 2025.
Following essential maintenance and upgrading, the theatres expand Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust’s trauma capacity, which allows more procedures to be carried out – including diabetic foot surgery. This change also means that operations can take place at weekends, helping to cut delays for inpatients and those needing urgent care.
The theatres now have an advanced ventilations system also which creates a highly sterile environment, with a controlled airflow reducing the risk of surgical site infections, meaning safer care for patients.
Main Theatres and Day Unit Manager, Denise Archer, said: “It’s great for patients as they experience treatments in an orthopaedic suite with the latest facilities. It will also help reduce waiting times.
“Staff are working in a modern environment, with lower noise levels and improved air flow. The new facilities improve opportunities for teamwork, learning and training – all of which means better care for our patients.”
