From Dial-Up to Deliveroo: John Lewis Marks a Quarter-Century of Online Shopping with Rapid Delivery Rollout

John Lewis has today announced a major expansion of its rapid delivery service alongside significant website and mobile app enhancements. By partnering with Deliveroo and Uber Eats, the retailer is making approximately 10,000 products available in as little as 30 minutes to customers within the catchment area of eight stores across London and select home counties – including Oxford Street, Peter Jones, Welwyn Garden City, Bluewater, and Kingston. This strategic move strengthens John Lewis’s omnichannel footprint, seamlessly integrating speed and convenience to its physical and digital retail approach.

Marking 25 years since johnlewis.com first launched, John Lewis is investing in both physical shops and its online platforms to inspire and serve customers however they choose to shop. By combining in-store customer service and Partner expertise with an inspirational website, powerful app, extensive click and collect network including next day collection from nearly 16,000 locations including Waitrose stores, and fast online delivery options, the retailer is bringing the very best of its shops and digital channels together as part of its multi-year £800m transformation programme.

Rapid delivery complements John Lewis’s established standard delivery and nationwide click and collect network, giving customers an ultra-fast delivery option for last-minute needs, urgent tech replacements, or emergency gifts. Data from the trial highlights a strong lunchtime peak, with 12pm to 2pm emerging as the highest-volume period for sales, driven by demand for urgent tech items, emergency gifts, and treat purchases.

The most popular item bought via the rapid delivery pilot to date is the Sony PlayStation 5 Controller, with gifting items and gifting packaging featuring highly, as well as personal fans as customers reached for a must-have cool down over the summer months.

To support its omnichannel focus and help prepare for peak trading – where up to 150,000 online orders a day will be processed – John Lewis is introducing a suite of digital enhancements across johnlewis.com and its mobile app. These improvements make it easier and quicker for customers to find and buy what they need, as well as offering relevant inspiration and ideas based on their browsing history.

Digital upgrades across the website and mobile app are designed to improve and simplify the overall customer experience. With a fresh look and feel, the website now offers customers more content and inspiration, and upgraded site search helps shoppers quickly find what they are looking for. The app, which now accounts for approximately 40% of online sales, continues to play a central role in driving customer engagement. It includes easy access to My John Lewis rewards and benefits, order history, and Live Chat to enable customers to access any support that they need.

To further enhance convenience and support modern shopping habits, John Lewis is embracing AI-powered discovery. With traffic from digital assistants continuing to grow year-on-year, the retailer is ensuring product ranges are easily discoverable and is currently developing a brand-new AI-powered product finder set to launch in time for Christmas.

Demonstrating how physical stores and online platforms work together as part of a seamless omnichannel strategy, John Lewis has delivered over 1.3 million items directly from its shops to customers since scaling deliver-from-store, unlocking local store stock to fulfill online orders and helping customers purchase items that would have traditionally been shown as out of stock online.
