Chelsea returned to winning ways in emphatic fashion with a 5-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth at Stamford Bridge, as Jordan Henderson and João Pedro both scored twice to help Xabi Alonso’s side end their recent run without a league win.
Henderson made an immediate impact on his home debut, opening the scoring in the second minute with a well-placed strike after receiving the ball from Cole Palmer. Chelsea doubled their advantage moments later, with Henderson turning provider for Morgan Rogers, whose effort found the net after a deflection.
The hosts maintained their attacking threat after the break, with João Pedro extending the lead shortly after the restart following good work from Pedro Neto. Bournemouth responded through Evanilson in the 51st minute, briefly offering the visitors hope of a comeback.
However, Chelsea quickly restored their three-goal cushion. João Pedro finished from Pep Chavarria’s low cross before Henderson completed his brace with an impressive free-kick from distance, sealing a convincing afternoon for the home side.
Alonso was pleased with Chelsea’s overall display, particularly the way his players responded after Bournemouth pulled a goal back. The manager acknowledged that his side had briefly lost control but was encouraged by their attacking response.
“Today was a complete performance,” he said. “We were in control for most parts of the game, so I’m happy with that.”
He added that Chelsea had been less assured for a spell after conceding, but was satisfied with the team’s overall performance and the positives it offered for the weeks ahead.
Henderson was among the standout performers, contributing two goals and an assist. The 36-year-old’s three goal involvements made this only the second time he had achieved that feat in a Premier League match, following a similar performance for Liverpool against Newcastle United in 2013.
Alonso stressed that the midfielder’s value extended well beyond his goals.
“We signed him for everything and if he’s able to score two beauties as he did today, we’re more than happy for him,” he said. “But apart from the goals, he has done many good things.”
The Chelsea manager also welcomed the return of Moisés Caicedo, who made his first start of the season after recovering from a calf problem. Alonso believes the midfielder’s presence brings greater balance to the team.
“With him we have a better midfield area and when you are better in the middle you have a more complete team and something to build around,” he said.
For Bournemouth manager Marco Rose, the result highlighted the need for his side to improve their start to matches and respond more effectively when under pressure.
The visitors conceded twice inside the opening three minutes, leaving them with an immediate uphill task against a Chelsea side keen to regain momentum.
“We were not ready, we were not sharp enough,” Rose admitted. “Even our pressing was not Bournemouth-like in many situations.”
He accepted that his team had fallen short of the required standard but urged his players to remain united as they look to turn their league campaign around.
“We need to face the reality – three points after six games,” he said. “But we’re going to stick together.”
Although Chelsea’s attacking performance provided plenty of encouragement, their defensive record remains a concern. Evanilson’s goal extended their run to 22 consecutive Premier League matches without a clean sheet, an issue Alonso will want to address despite the convincing scoreline.
The manager also confirmed that captain Reece James had picked up a knee injury during training on Friday, leaving his availability to be assessed.
Chelsea’s emphatic win gives Alonso’s side renewed momentum after a difficult spell, while Bournemouth must respond quickly after another disappointing league result. Chelsea’s next fixture is an away trip to Everton, where they will look to build on their performance at Stamford Bridge.
