Sunderland v Brighton: Injury-Hit Black Cats Face In-Form Seagulls

Sunderland return to Premier League action on Saturday facing a difficult test against Brighton at the Stadium of Light, with Régis Le Bris looking for a more consistent performance from his side. Brighton arrive in confident mood after an impressive 3-0 victory over Arsenal, and Fabian Hürzeler will be keen to maintain that momentum.

Sunderland have collected four points from their opening five league matches. A 1-0 win over Fulham and a draw against Brentford offered encouragement, but defeats by Arsenal and Manchester City have left Le Bris searching for greater consistency. Their 5-3 loss at the Etihad Stadium before the international break was particularly frustrating, despite Brian Brobbey scoring a hat-trick.

The result highlighted Sunderland’s attacking threat but also the defensive errors they need to eliminate. Le Bris believes improving that balance is essential, saying:

“It’s mainly about consistency. We have many ups and now the downs appear a bit too often, and it’s about unforced errors rather than something well played from the opponent.”

His task has been complicated by injuries picked up during the international break. Defender Dan Ballard suffered a hamstring injury while representing Northern Ireland and is expected to miss several weeks. Brobbey also sustained a hamstring problem on Netherlands duty and will miss the Brighton match, while Habib Diarra is working towards a return.

With Brobbey unavailable, Wilson Isidor could take on greater responsibility in attack. Le Bris remains confident in the striker’s ability to contribute, saying:

“We have Wilson [Isidor], who is a really good striker with a different style of play but really competitive for the Premier League and showed his qualities last season.”

Brighton will pose a significant challenge. They have collected 10 points from their opening five league matches and sit third, having scored 16 goals. Their 5-0 victory over Coventry City and the subsequent win against Arsenal underline their attacking potential, making defensive discipline crucial for the hosts.

Hürzeler has received encouraging news regarding captain Lewis Dunk, who is available again after a minor neck injury, while Jack Hinshelwood has returned to training. The Brighton manager said:

“Lewis will be back and Jack trained this week. With him, we have to see if it makes sense to take him into the squad because the next weeks will be busy and we have a lot of games. It is about managing the players and understanding who is really available but not risking anything. Overall, these two players are definitely available.”

However, Brighton remain without several players who are still recovering. Mats Wieffer, Yankuba Minteh and Kaoru Mitoma are getting closer to a return but are not yet fit, while Stefanos Tzimas is progressing and Evan Ferguson is expected to need several more weeks.

With domestic and European fixtures placing greater demands on his squad, Hürzeler views the schedule as an opportunity for Brighton to develop rather than a problem. He said:

“We see it more as an opportunity than a problem.”

The Brighton boss also expects Sunderland to provide a physical test, with the home crowd likely to play an important role.

“There is always a fight in Sunderland because it is a very physical team. It is a great stadium with very loud supporters.”

Brighton won 1-0 at the Stadium of Light in March, giving them further encouragement ahead of Saturday’s meeting. Sunderland will need to reduce defensive mistakes and make the most of their chances if they are to reverse that result and get their campaign back on track.

For Le Bris, the priority is turning promising spells into more reliable performances. Brighton, meanwhile, will look to build on their victory over Arsenal and maintain their place among the Premier League’s early pace-setters.
