EDF has launched a new Low Standing Charge Trial to help customers save money on their bills.
The year-long trial is available through EDF’s existing FreePhase tariffs and is targeted at lower-energy users, offering additional savings through reduced standing charges.
Eligible customers who take part in the trial will receive a £6.25 monthly discount per fuel on their standing charges. There are no exit fees.
The standing charge discount is in addition to the savings available through FreePhase, which gives customers the opportunity to save. Analysis by EDF has identified that in the first five months of 2026 customers have already saved an average of £152 so far, despite volatility in wholesale prices.
The trial follows Ofgem’s earlier announcement that suppliers would be required to offer a lower standing charge tariff to customers.
Callum Morgan, Product Design Expert for Smart Tariffs, said: “It is important that we and Ofgem continue to look at ways we can help all of our customers reduce their bills, so we are pleased to offer this trial tariff, focused on helping lower users save.
“Combining the trial with our FreePhase product gives customers a real opportunity to make more sizable savings which we hope will make a real difference.”
EDF’s FreePhase Dynamic tariff is split into three time bands: green (super off peak, 11pm-6am), amber (off peak 6am-4pm and 7pm-11pm), and red (peak 4-7pm), with rates updated daily to reflect wholesale electricity prices. Customers can save by shifting their electricity use to off-peak periods, such as charging an electric vehicle, doing the laundry or running household appliances when rates are cheapest. Prices are available the day before, giving customers time to plan their energy use.
For customers who want more predictable pricing, EDF also offers FreePhase Static. This tariff uses the same three-band system (red, amber, green), but the unit rates are locked in for a year. With FreePhase Static, off‑peak (amber) prices were up to 10% lower, and night-time (green) rates were up to 37% cheaper than the previous months standard variable tariff.
New customers can join through the existing FreePhase online sign-up process and, if eligible, can opt into the trial. Existing FreePhase customers will also be able to request to join.
