Staff at Torridge District Council, in collaboration with Active Torridge, recently took part in Know Your Numbers! Week 2026.
Know Your Numbers! Week which is organised by Blood Pressure UK, runs from 7-13 September and focuses on raising awareness about high blood pressure and encouraging adults to get tested, as the condition rarely shows clear symptoms.
Health and fitness checks were conducted on staff by the Active Torridge team, who provide numerous leisure, sport and wellbeing opportunities across Torridge. Alongside these checks, staff were also encouraged to take part in a series of wellbeing sessions, such as Self Defence and Stretch & Tone classes.
Around a third of adults in the UK have high blood pressure but due to its lack of symptoms, most don’t know it. If left untreated, it can significantly increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other serious illnesses, making events like this a vital way of encouraging early action.
Chris Keeble, Chief Operating Officer at Active Torridge, said:
“Tackling this ‘silent killer’ is a critical aspect of improving population health. Too often people with high blood pressure only find out when faced with a serious health event, such as a heart attack or stroke. However, a simple test, which only takes a minute or so, can significantly alter the course of your health and may even save your life.
At Active Torridge, we’re here to support you every step of the way. Our team offers expert guidance alongside a wide range of fun, enjoyable activities tailored to your interests and abilities. So, if you’re looking for a way to kick-start positive lifestyle changes, why not join us and take charge of your health, because staying active and healthy has never been more exciting!”
Councillor Lyndon Piper, Lead Member for Leisure at Torridge District Council, added:
“High blood pressure doesn’t have symptoms, so many people only find out once serious damage has been done. Active Torridge has shown us just how quick and easy it is to get your numbers checked and start taking action. We hope our staff will share this message with those around them, helping more people take that vital first step in looking after our health. I’d urge everyone to find their nearest event or pharmacy and get checked.”
