Fulham 0-1 Bournemouth: Rayan Strikes As Ten Man Cherries Defeat The Cottagers To Extend Unbeaten Run

The historic Bournemouth side showed its true colours in London as a win against Fulham ensured that their impressive unbeaten run stood at 16 games. Despite the high-pressure nature of the game, the tactical battles being played out, and even two players receiving red cards in the first half alone, the young Brazilian Rayan scored the crucial goal that decided the messy West London clash.

The Match Action

The match seemed to have started off like any other and the first 40 minutes were largely forgettable as both teams failed to find their rhythm. However, after 40 minutes, the action exploded. One of the key players for Bournemouth’s midfield, Ryan Christie, received a red card due to an incredibly dangerous tackle on Timothy Castagne. However, their numerical advantage just lasted four minutes. Deep into stoppage time, Fulham’s Joachim Andersen committed a nearly identical foul on Adrien Truffert, leaving the referee with no choice but to brandish another red card.

The latter stages of the match, contested as a 10-v-10 game, were ideal for the attacking tactics of Bournemouth. The deadlock was finally broken in the 53rd minute when Adam Smith broke through the lines and laid the ball off for Rayan. In his first season in the English top-flight, the promising young talent moved the ball to his left and fired a shot that sailed past Bernd Leno.

Fulham were all-out in the dying moments of the game. Manager Marco Silva made two substitutes in Raúl Jiménez and Harry Wilson in search of a draw. However, Bournemouth’s backline, anchored by Illia Zabarnyi, remained solid as a rock. In fact, the Cherries could have scored another goal on a counter-attack as Justin Kluivert hit the outside of the post in stoppage time.

The Aftermath

The team led by Andoni Iraola is currently considered to be “the story of the season.” It is no small thing to remain undefeated in 16 league matches within the current format of the Premier League competition; however, such an achievement is typically achieved only by one of the Big Six teams. Yet here comes Bournemouth, which occupies the sixth position in the league table and seems to be a strong contender for playing in Europe.
