Surplus Ship Rope Repurposed For Animal Enrichment At Longleat Safari Park

From Sea to Safari: Meachers Transfers CS Sovereign Rope to Longleat for Animal Enrichment

Meachers Global Logistics has coordinated the transfer of 13,000 metres of surplus rope from the CS Sovereign, a Global Marine vessel, to Longleat Safari Park, ensuring valuable materials are repurposed rather than sent to landfill. The rope will be used within Longleat’s Gorilla enclosure and the Binturong (Bearcat) enclosure, where the animals spend much of their time navigating elevated canopies. These additions will assist animal care teams in enhancing the structural complexity and enrichment opportunities within the habitats.

Mark Lee, General Manager for Freight Forwarding at Meachers Global Logistics said:

“We’re delighted to support another meaningful reuse project with Global Marine. Working together to prevent high‑quality material from going to waste while also helping respected wildlife organisations is incredibly rewarding. This second donation demonstrates what can be achieved through simple collaboration and a shared commitment to sustainability.”

This initiative represents the second major rope donation facilitated by Meachers Global Logistics on behalf of Global Marine. The first took place when Meachers organised the delivery of 10 pallets of rope to Monkey World in Dorset, supporting their primate rescue and rehabilitation work. Both donations highlight an ongoing commitment to sustainability and the reuse of materials wherever possible.

Paul Deslandes, CEO of Global Marine Group said:

“Repurposing materials like this rope is a simple but effective way for us to reduce waste while supporting organisations doing fantastic work – it’s great to see equipment from the vessel now being given a second life in a completely different environment. We’re pleased to work with Meachers Global Logistics to ensure these materials are reused in a way that benefits animal welfare and sustainability.”

The rope originated from Global Marine’s maintenance vessel, the C.S. Sovereign, which supports subsea cable repairs right across the Atlantic Ocean. Based in Portland, the ship is known for its appearance in the film The Woman in Cabin 10.

Speaking about the donation, Darren Beasley, Head of Animal Operations, said

“We cannot express how generous this donation is. This high-quality material will make such a difference to our animals across the park, particularly our arboreal species. The rope otherwise would have been sent to landfill and instead we can create range of enrichment activities and environments for our animals, including rope climbing frames for our monkeys, among others.” Through this collaboration, Global Marine and Meachers Global Logistics continue to demonstrate their shared dedication to environmental responsibility. By diverting materials from waste streams and supporting wildlife organisations, both companies are contributing meaningfully to animal welfare and sustainable practice within the region.
