BREAKING: Ruthless Tuchel Drops Phil Foden and Cole Palmer in Shock England World Cup Squad Reveal

England manager Thomas Tuchel has sent shockwaves across world football with the announcement of his 26-man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. In what Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol described as the “most shocking England squad since 1998,” Tuchel has ruthlessly axed a host of household names while handing a dramatic recall to striker Ivan Toney.

The announcement, delivered via a special Beatles-soundtracked film broadcast on the official England app, confirmed that Harry Kane will lead the Three Lions into the tournament. However, the real story lies in the spectacular omissions that have left fans and pundits reeling.

The Big Absentees: Foden, Palmer, and Maguire Axed

Tuchel has made good on his promise to embrace “tough decisions.” The most glaring exclusions from the traveling party are Manchester City’s Phil Foden and Chelsea’s Cole Palmer. Both playmakers suffered below-par club campaigns this season and ultimately fell victim to Tuchel’s “embarrassment of riches” in the No. 10 position.

“To reduce it was difficult, sometimes painfully difficult,” Tuchel admitted. “Even in the phone calls I felt the emotion… For some it was a positional thing and not bring[ing] five No 10s and making them play out of position.”

Joining Foden and Palmer on the sidelines is Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has not earned an England cap since last summer. Meanwhile, Harry Maguire’s omission was pre-empted by a furious social media post on Thursday evening, where the veteran defender declared he was “shocked and gutted” to be left out.

Other notable absentees include Nottingham Forest forward Morgan Gibbs-White, Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton, and West Ham captain Jarrod Bowen.

The Surprise Inclusions: Toney’s Sensational Return

While the omissions generated headlines, the inclusion of Ivan Toney is arguably the biggest shock of the selection.

The Al-Ahli striker has played a grand total of seven minutes of international football under Tuchel since Euro 2024. However, a staggering return of 32 goals in 32 Saudi Pro League appearances has earned him a place on the plane as a crucial backup to Kane, alongside Aston Villa’s Ollie Watkins.

The defensive selection also raised eyebrows. Newcastle’s Tino Livramento makes the cut despite battling a thigh issue for the past month, and Tottenham’s Djed Spence is included despite reports of a broken jaw sustained earlier this week.

The squad also features nine players making their senior tournament bow, including promising talents like Manchester City’s Nico O’Reilly, Bayer Leverkusen’s Jarell Quansah, and Arsenal’s Noni Madueke.

Historic Milestones and The Road Ahead

Amidst the controversy, several players will hit significant milestones in North America. Captain Harry Kane will equal Billy Wright’s record by leading the side at his third World Cup. Meanwhile, veteran midfielder Jordan Henderson, recalled to the squad despite missing recent international camps, will make a record-equalling fourth World Cup appearance, joining Sir Bobby Charlton.

The squad will initially convene at a prep camp in Palm Beach, Florida, on June 1, before relocating to their permanent base in Kansas City on June 13. They will face New Zealand and Costa Rica in warm-up friendlies before beginning their World Cup campaign in Group L.

“In March last year we said to the players ‘let’s try to win it’,” Tuchel stated. “I strongly believe if the energy and the commitment is right, this is really a brotherhood, the fans will notice and see… Let’s play with hunger, with excitement.”
