National Highways is advising motorists to plan their journeys along the A303 ahead of this weekend’s Summer Solstice event at Stonehenge.
The event will take place on Saturday, 20 June and the morning of Sunday, 21 June, and with parking on site now sold out, English Heritage is once again urging visitors to use public transport or car share.
Only visitors with an official parking booking will be able to access the car park at Stonehenge, which will be open from 7pm on 20 June until 4.15am on 21 June, and those without a booked parking space will be turned away. The car park must be vacated by noon on the Sunday.
Buses will run from Salisbury and Amesbury – the website is here – and pedestrians are advised to use the designated, temporary pedestrian crossing on the A303 at Stonehenge Cottages.
During the Solstice event, National Highways will assist the flow of traffic before, during and after the event.
A 40mph speed limit will be in place on the A303 between the Countess roundabout and Longbarrow roundabout, with the lay-bys closed in between, and the dual carriageway will be reduced to a single lane between Countess Roundabout and Stonehenge Cottages.
Traffic will be diverted via the A345 and sections of the A303 and A36, and a comprehensive signage system will be in place to inform road users around Salisbury and as far away as Devizes and Shaftesbury to point traffic to alternate routes.
Drivers are advised to follow the solstice specific signs rather than their sat navs, and can obtain up-to-the-minute travel information via National Highways’ Travel Alerts web page, on X (formerly Twitter), by phoning the company’s Information Line on 0300 123 5000 or by visiting www.trafficengland.com
